Is flossing part of your daily routine? Less than one-quarter of adults floss regularly, according to the Oral Health Foundation. flossingUnfortunately skipping this important oral hygiene practice can affect your dental health. Dr. Howard Listopad and Dr. Tammy Finder, your Coral Springs, FL dentists, explain why you should make flossing a daily habit.
Your breath will be fresher
Have you ever forgotten to empty the trash before going on vacation? When you returned, you were probably greeted with a very unpleasant smell, thanks to the rotting food in the trash can. Unfortunately, the same problem can occur on a smaller scale if you skip flossing. No matter how well you brush, tiny particles of food tend to get stuck between your teeth. Removing those particles, in addition to brushing your teeth and tongue and using mouthwash, is an excellent way to keep your breath fresher.
You’ll have fewer cavities
Cavities don’t just develop on the chewing surfaces of teeth but can also occur between teeth. The problem starts when plaque, a colorless sticky film that contains bacteria, covers your teeth. You may not be able to see plaque, but you can feel it. Run your tongue over your teeth. If they feel rough and a little sticky, they’re covered in plaque. When you eat, the bacteria in plaque mingle with the sugars in foods and create acids. Those acids destroy tooth enamel and cause tooth decay. If you don’t floss, acids will have plenty time to attack your enamel and create cavities between your teeth.
You’ll reduce your gum disease risk
Removing plaque is a simple process, but getting rid of tartar requires special dental cleaning instruments. Unfortunately, if you don’t use floss to get rid of plaque between your teeth, it can turn into tartar, a hard deposit that leaves gray or brown marks on your teeth. Tartar build up can lead to gum disease, but fortunately you can reduce the build up by flossing every day.
